A few months ago i was approached by Phil Robinson from Flight Academy Helicopters Barton to under go some training to work as Ground Crew/ Fire Crew for Heli-Support.
Heli-Support provides active ground support for private and commercial helicopters wanting to land at their own venues.
We turned up at Barton Visitor Center our first Introduction in to what we need to do! Lee Pattinson was going to be Head of the operation, Lee has worked as Fire Fighter for a number of years and also has PPL(A) and is now training for his PPL(H) he had been solo just recently. With Lee being a builder we had converted his truck in to a fully working fire truck with 750 LTR tank for water, hoses, extinguishers and Clothing. With this all in hand we are now well on our way with our training to comply with CAA regulations.
One of our first outings as ground crew was City Airport Manchester's Open Day. (Photos Courtesy Gary Styles)
As you can see their were 3 Ground crew essentially one person for each door of the helicopter for guiding passengers in and out. Our main job was Safety ensuring member of the public don't run to the most dangerous part of the machine which is at the back also briefing of what to do in an accident. We started flying from about 1200HRS Local and didn't stop till 1700 so you can imagine by the end of the day i was saying the briefing in my sleep!
We have also done some pleasure flying up in Ashton for a rugby club fun day operating out of a fish farm. This was done over two days and we managed to fly well over 200 people which was massive success!
For information and details on pleasure flying have a look Flight Academy or ring the office Tuesday through to Sunday on 0161 788 8489 ask to speak to Phil!
